3 Pocket Pies and a Breville Pie Maker Giveaway!

pumpkinpocketpieI bought this pumpkin pocket pie mold out of season last year, from Williams and Sonoma, and I’ve been impatiently waiting for the appropriate season to use it. I don’t normally buy seasonal looking stuff for that reason (i.e., I have no Christmas decorations and would be too lazy to put them up anyway). Amaya was excited to use it as a cookie cutter. And that’s basically what it is, except it aids in making the pocket and presses it together. Very simple and it worked well.

I actually read that hand pies are going to be the new cupcakes, so if you make these, you are ahead of the trend (better go get your food truck now).

My mom made some really good grape purse appetizer thingys (that’s the technical name, people) while I was home in Oregon, so that was my first thought when I decided to make some little hand pies. Recipes at the bottom of the post.

Puff pastry crust, filling of grape, feta, basil, and a drizzle of balsalmic vinegar. The salty sweet acid combo was wondrous here. I’m thinking, holiday party or just a nice lunch. Feta’s thick saltiness plays on the grape texture in every bite. Basil solidified it as a savory pie and gave it a warm aftertaste.

101210009101210011Puff pastry crust, filling of squash, cheese, chicken and veggies. I’ve been making pot pies with squash ever since Damaris showed me this trick last year. The sweet squash binds together the dish. Cream and cheese make it saucy but not runny.

Dessert: 101210007101210008

Puff pastry crust, chocolate and butterscotch chip filling. That’s it. Crisp, sweet, and warm out of the oven. The vents in the crust brought the smell to my nose. I think I ate dessert first, and luckily my daughter can’t read yet.

Puff pastry rocks. It was the perfect thickness for cutting these molds and they baked up nicely. I rerolled the scraps and those crusts were a bit thicker but still good.

I was happy about my pocket pie mold until I saw the Breville Pie Maker in some Williams and Sonoma ads and in a newspaper article.

img47mimg90mOh, I am coveting this pie maker. They make the cutest pies on earth. (images courtesy W&S)

Here’s the deal with this contraption:

  1. non stick
  2. 8 minutes
  3. 4 molded perfect pies

Yes. I want one. I would go out and buy one this second if I could. But guess what. My kitchen is itty bitty and my hub will kill me if I get one more thing to put in my cupboard (we just bought a huge waffle iron), so one of you, my loyal wonderful readers, will get one instead.

Merry Christmas to you.

(and Thank you, thank you, W&S. You are Santa Claus for foodies everywhere.)

To enter this giveaway, leave a comment telling me what kind of pie you would make with this Breville Pie Maker.

For 1 extra entry, publicly follow this blog and tweet/facebook this giveaway, and leave a comment letting me know.

Giveaway is open until December 15th, 12pm. Make sure you have an e-mail address attached to your comment (either on your profile or you can email it to me) or I will draw someone else.

If, by chance, you love W&S as much as me, you’ll be excited to know that W&S on-line has a deal right now to become part of their Reserve program for $30, and you’ll get free shipping on all standard items for a whole year. For Hawaii residents like me, that’s a big deal.

Other items I love from W&S

Hope you’ve finished your Christmas shopping (unlike me).

Good luck and happy weekend!

I would love to try making blueberry pie! I have not had much luck with them in traditional pie plates - could be fun!

Katie said...

Ooh, that looks like a fun kitchen "toy." What would I make first? Our family's classic pot pie is the chicken pot pie from the Silver Palate - that would be even better in this fashion!

Masayuki said...

This looks amazing. I would make Nashi pie in this bad boy. As always, I love the pictures. Amanda would love that pie you made.

I read pies are the next cupcakes also. This is a cool gadget saw it in W&S. I may not have the counter space but if I win, I'll definitely use it to make savory pies. Maybe some curry beef puffs? Btw, love your quick pie recipes!

Ooooooo! It's a cold rainy day here in Oregon, and I'm craving manapua and pot pies. I would want to make a char siu meat pie ... with a blueberry pie for dessert, because Hostess doesn't have the mostest anymore!

Virginia said...

Mmmm. I would love to make a blackberry pie! All though your butterscotch and chocolate pies look amazing.

Kirsten said...

OMG. If that isn't the most ah-dorable appliance. Perfect for a little foodie! I've been making pie in a jar, but this really takes it up a notch. I would make four pies at once: a fig anise pie, a curried sweet potato pie, an apple rosemary pie, and one pie that is just filled with nutella.

English meat pies or cornish pasties. YUM!

Your pies look so yummy! I love helpful kitchen gadgets :) I would make a pecan pie but in a vegan version. I have been trying to perfect that one lately. You just can't go wrong with pie :)

Jo said...

so many options as to what kind of pie I would make, and I think I would start with sour cream brown sugar peach and strawberry pies!

Kari said...

I love your three pies idea! Inspired! If I had the W&S mini pie maker I'd definitely go the savory route. Maybe a chicken curry pot pie.

Linda said...

the chicken pie you mentioned sounds delicious!

Seymour Chase said...

hand pies make me think of those hostess pies we'd get from 7/11 - but this seems, you know, more high class. and also those swanson frozen pot pies - so, i guess this pie maker would help me class it up and avoid foods one should only eat as a teenager.

also, i'm now a follower.

Ooooh, these pies look delish! What a great filling!

And that pie machine is awesome! I would make a potato, caramelized onion and dill pie. Yummy!

O.M.G.!!! What pie WOULDN'T I make in this baby?!? I'm from Washington, so apple pie is definitely at the top of the list - a very LONG list.... everything from fruit to berry to cream to cheese to meat to savory. I ♥ little pies! I'm thinking I could make Beef Wellingtons in this little gem, and I'm intrigued to try your recipe. I am smitten!

Debbie S. said...

Very cute. I'm thinking blueberry. Or apple. Or chicken pot pie. So nice of you.

Katie Lewis said...

I would make something a Cornish pasty. I always read about them in historical novels and have wanted to make them but never had the time. This would certainly make that something that could be done on a whim!

Apple Pie

Christi said...

I would make chicken pot pies, and then try to figure out a beef pot pie. Ooooh or maybe instead start with pear pies.

Sylvia Louise said...

Savory: Something with mushrooms, spicy Italian sausage, cream-and-Swiss cheese sauce. And fennel too.

Or maybe one in which the main ingredient was chick peas.

Sweet: Blueberries and black berries with some amaretto and diced almonds.

Sylvia Louise said...

Okay, sorry, back again. I know this just counts as one entry, but now I'm hungry. So maybe I'd do one with some roasted red and green peppers and feta and zucchini and red pepper flakes and... something else. Something crunchy to throw off all that soft filling.

I just need to go eat lunch, because I'm getting a little out of hand.

Maria B said...

I would make all sorts of little cutesy pies. Starting with some blackcurrant pie from the batch that eagerly awaits its turn to shine in my freezer, then probably apples and some salty stuff as well :)

Maria B said...

Oh and I am a public follower as well :)

What an awesome giveaway. I saw this online for the first time last week and felt like I had to have it. It looks like such a fun way to enjoy making pie.

Smiths said...

I'm thinking of some kind of haupia/choc. pie. Mmmm. I'd probably just ask you for some recipes though.

Nippon Nin said...

Though,I used goat cheese instead of feta chaeese it still looks good. I first made that appetizer was when we had generous crop of seedles grapes in our back yard 10 or so years ago. Now birds get them as soon as it's ready, very sad. Anyway, it looks like fun kitchen toy.

probably some type of apple pie!

I went into TWO Williams-Sonoma stores looking for their panko crumbs...both were out, so I'm a little frustrated with them now. But the pie mold is an adorable find.
An apple and cheddar pie, perhaps. It sounds delicious!

Jackie said...

Oh. My. God. I LOVE THOSE. I want that pie mould thingy! This is some serious lust... and I'm not even much of a pie girl!

I'm guessing the give-away won't be open to me as I'm not a US resident, but that doesn't mean I can't lust after that pie mould, too. Lust, lust, lust.
